Life, by its very nature, is uncertain. Yet within that uncertainty, we all experience key milestone moments that mark significant change; becoming parents for the first time, starting a new school or job, moving house, getting married or divorced, saying goodbye to loved ones.
And itās not only our external world that shifts. Our bodies, too, move through powerful seasons of change; from childhood growth and puberty, through pregnancy, peri-menopause, and menopause, to recovery from illness or injury, and the natural process of aging.
Each time life changes course, you enter a transitional journey; one that can be beautifully supported by the wisdom found in natureās own cycles.
This blog explores how the rhythms of the seasons via the Chinese 5 Elements model offer both a practical framework and a deeper sense of reassurance as you navigate change.
Think of the Seasons as metaphors for the phases of any transition. They may, or may not, reflect whatās unfolding outside your window, but they mirror the inner landscape of your life:
SummerĀ - when life feels in full bloom
Late Summer - a time for grounding and enjoying the fruits of your labour
AutumnĀ - the gentle release and letting go
WinterĀ - a time of reflection, rest, and renewal
SpringĀ - the stirring of new beginnings
Weāve been taught that success means staying in āSummerā all the time; always thriving, achieving, producing. But what if real growth happens when we honour every season, especially the quiet darkness of Winter?
I invite you to see change not as something to resist, but as an invitation to deepen, to listen, and to grow into your next Summer, wiser and more aligned than before. Below is the seasons of change spiral created by Carol McClelland Fields, PhD, BCC.

Seasons of Change - Let Nature and the Five Elements Be Your Guide š
Do you have a sense of where you are on the Seasons of Change Spiral?
Each season and each Element brings its own rhythm, emotion, and energetic invitation. By tuning into natureās cycles, we can understand our own cycles of change more deeply - physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
As you read, notice which Season and Element most resonates with your current state. Trust your inner knowing ā it already understands the wisdom of the cycle youāre in.
šAutumn: The Metal Element
Theme:Ā Letting go, reflection, and finding meaning
Emotion:Ā Grief transforming into gratitude
Organs:Ā Lungs and Large Intestine
You may be in Autumn (Metal)Ā if you sense that something is shifting - an ending, a release, or a call to simplify. Perhaps youāre letting go of what no longer serves you, or waiting in uncertainty for something new to take form.
Focus your attention on:
Acknowledging what is changing and allowing space for release
Creating healthy boundaries and cultivating order
Breathing deeply - exhaling the old, inhaling new possibilities
Avoid detours like:
Denying what needs to be released
Holding on to people, habits, or stories out of fear
Trying to control whatās naturally falling away
In kinesiology terms, balancing the Metal element can help restore clarity, self-worth, and the ability to breathe through lifeās transitions.
āļøWinter: The Water Element
Theme:Ā Rest, reflection, and renewal
Emotion:Ā Fear transforming into wisdom
Organs:Ā Kidneys and Bladder
You may be in Winter (Water)Ā if you feel tired, withdrawn, or craving stillness. Itās a time to rest, recharge, and reconnect to your inner wisdom - to trust that growth continues even beneath the surface.
Focus your attention on:
Deep rest and nurturing your reserves
Listening to your intuition and inner truth
Allowing stillness to restore your strength
Avoid detours like:
Forcing productivity when your body needs restoration
Distracting yourself from fear rather than facing it
Rushing ahead before your energy is ready
Balancing the Water element helps restore courage, trust, and the deep knowing that life will flow forward again.
š±Ā Spring - The Wood Element
Theme:Ā New growth, vision, and expansion
Emotion:Ā Frustration transforming into creativity and flow
Organs:Ā Liver and Gallbladder
You may be in Spring (Wood)Ā if you feel the stirring of new ideas and energy ā yet perhaps also impatience or resistance as you re-enter life with a new direction.
Focus your attention on:
Clarifying your vision and setting gentle goals
Moving your body to release stagnant energy
Taking small, aligned steps forward
Avoid detours like:
Holding yourself back out of fear of failure
Becoming rigid or overly forceful
Ignoring your inner guidance or timing
Balancing the Wood element supports flexibility, vision, and a renewed sense of purpose.
āļøĀ Summer ā The Fire Element
Theme:Ā Joy, connection, and full expression
Emotion:Ā Over excitement transforming into balanced joy
Organs:Ā Heart and Small Intestine
You may be in Summer (Fire)Ā if you feel energised, creative, and ready to share your light - a time when relationships, projects, and ideas blossom fully.
Focus your attention on:
Following your joy and staying heart-led
Celebrating your growth and achievements
Cultivating warm, authentic connections
Avoid detours like:
Burning out by doing too much
Losing focus in the excitement of new possibilities
Over-giving without replenishing your own energy
Balancing the Fire element helps maintain inner harmony, healthy relationships, and the ability to shine without depletion.
š¾Ā Late Summer - The Earth Element
Theme:Ā Nurturing, integration, and balance
Emotion:Ā Worry transforming into trust
Organs:Ā Stomach and Spleen
You may be in Late Summer (Earth)Ā if youāre consolidating change and finding your centre after a time of movement. Itās a moment to nourish body and mind, and to ground yourself in what youāve learned.
Focus your attention on:
Nourishing your body with wholesome food and care
Practising gratitude for how far youāve come
Creating balance between giving and receiving
Avoid detours like:
Overthinking or worrying about whatās next
Neglecting your own needs while caring for others
Becoming stuck in indecision
Balancing the Earth element enhances stability, self-nurture, and emotional harmony - helping you digest both food and lifeās experiences with ease.
